Instead, the French voted heavily for the leftist opposition and protest parties, raising the chances that the Socialists could lead a majority in Parliament after runoff elections next Sunday. 1 A Stunning Result in Iran Near-final results announced after Iran's presidential election showed the dimensions of the upset victory by a moderate cleric, Mohammed Khatami, who won a surprising 69 percent of the vote.
