The Intek Diversified Corporation agreed yesterday to buy certain wireless communications businesses from Simmonds Capital Ltd. and Securicor Group P.L.C. for stock valued at more than $237 million at Thursday's closing price plus an undisclosed amount of cash. The transactions will combine Intek's Roamer One air time services business with the United States land mobile radio business of Simmonds's Midland International Corporation unit, as well as the radio communications unit of Securicor Group. Intek, a Los Angeles-based company that is building a nationwide mobile radio network, will buy a license to use the Midland name for 2.5 million Intek shares.

Storage Trust Realty said yesterday that it had agreed to acquire 25 self-storage facilities from Balcor/Colonial Storage Income Fund-86 for $67.1 million. Storage Trust, a real estate investment trust based in Columbia, Mo., said the agreement was subject to certain conditions, including approval by the limited partners of Balcor/Colonial. Storage Trust operates 138 facilities in 16 states.

Almost 3,000 people, most of them children, have died in epidemics of meningitis, cholera and measles this year in northern Nigeria, the World Health Organization said today. Citing official figures, an organization spokesman said 17,688 cases of meningitis and 2,550 deaths had been reported as of March 5 from an epidemic that began in early January. Four-fifths of the victims were under age 15. Another 299 died of cholera and of measles. The increases were significant and a sign of serious epidemics, the spokesman said.

The Digital Equipment Corporation displayed two new families of work stations and new graphics for its machines yesterday in a bid to improve its fifth-place market share. Digital Equipment, based in Maynard, Mass., said the new entry-level and midrange machines would offer more computing power for the money than its competitors. Work stations are powerful computers used by engineers, scientists and software programmers. Digital Equipment's new entry-level line, called the Alpha Station 255, consists of two models with prices starting at $7,399, the company said. The midlevel line, called Alpha Station 500, consists of three models, with prices starting at $15,863.

Harcourt General Inc. said yesterday that it would raise its stock buyback program by one million shares. The publishing and retailing company may now repurchase from investors 3.5 million shares, up from 2.5 million shares previously. So far the company has bought back 1.8 million shares under the original program, which was approved in April 1995. Harcourt said it now had about 72.6 million shares outstanding. The company's shares were down $2, at $44.625, on the New York Stock Exchange.

Enhance Financial Services Group Inc. said yesterday that the Manufacturers Life Insurance Company planned to sell its remaining 12.3 percent stake in the company. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Enhance said that Toronto-based Manufacturers, a founding shareholder of the company, planned to sell up to 1.95 million shares in an underwritten offering and more than 211,000 more shares if demand was strong enough. On Feb 9, Manufacturers agreed to sell 400,000 shares at $24.48 each to the Swiss Reinsurance Company. Enhance is a New York reinsurer of financial guaranties issued by insurers of municipal bonds and other insurance products.
