New Venture Plans System On Internet For Travelers

The executive in charge of the American Express retail travel business has resigned to become president and chief executive of Middlegate Inc., a new start-up venture that plans to develop an Internet-oriented travel system to compete against conventional travel agents. John L. Williams Jr., formerly the general manager of the American Express Consumer Travel Network, the nation's largest retail travel agency, will head the new company, which has the financial backing of three Silicon Valley venture capital firms: Accel Partners, New Enterprise Associates and Hummer Winblad Venture Partners. It is also backed by the Intel Corporation and Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.

With flashes of exasperation and combativeness, O. J. Simpson today gave the most detailed response he has offered to accusations that he killed Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald L. Goldman, denying that he had abused Mrs. Simpson and expressing suspicions that the police planted evidence. "I was innocent, and I did not commit these crimes," Mr. Simpson said in a long call to a law program on CNN. "And it took all of my life savings, virtually, to prove that, and it shouldn't be that way."

GREENWICH BUYING AVIALL'S ENGINE SERVICES UNIT Greenwich Air Services Inc. signed a letter of intent yesterday to purchase Aviall Inc.'s Commercial Engine Services division for an estimated price of $260 million to $280 million. Shares of both companies surged yesterday. The acquisition will make Greenwich the world's largest company in the business of engine repair, maintenance and overhaul. The purchase includes Aviall's operations in Dallas, Fort Worth and Prestwick, Scotland, as well as its components business in McAllen, Tex. Greenwich shares rose $5, or 22 percent, to close at $27.75 in Nasdaq trading; Aviall shares rose $1.25, or 23.3 percent, to close at $6.625 on the New York Stock Exchange. (Reuters)

The Microsoft Corporation's acquisition of a fledgling World Wide Web software company, Vermeer Technologies Inc., is being investigated by Federal antitrust regulators, the Justice Department said yesterday. The investigators are looking at whether the purchase will hurt competition on the Internet's World Wide Web. It is unusual because it involves such a small company in the emerging and competitive market for Web software, antitrust lawyers said. Since last year, Federal officials have been examining the company's entry into the market for on-line information services. The Justice Department investigation of the Vermeer acquisition was first reported yesterday by The Wall Street Journal.

The Samsonite Corporation, the luggage maker, said yesterday that it would consolidate its manufacturing operations and some administrative functions, resulting in a $2.4 million charge in the fourth quarter, which ended on Jan. 31. The consolidation would involve moving all domestic hard-side luggage manufacturing to Samsonite's Denver plant. The company also plans to consolidate finance, accounting, management information systems and human resource functions with existing departments in Denver. The move is expected to save Denver-based Samsonite about $3.3 million a year. The company's stock jumped $2.375 yesterday, to $12.375, in Nasdaq trading.

Citibank said yesterday that it was leading a team to develop and operate a program to issue food stamps and public assistance benefits electronically. The team selected by the Northeast Coalition of States included Bank of Boston, I.B.M., Lockheed Martin and Deluxe Data. The company said the coalition included New York, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. The program, called Electronic Benefits Transfer, would issue plastic debit cards to participants, which could be used to withdraw cash from automated teller machines and to purchase food and other commodities, Citibank, a unit of Citicorp, said. The pilot program is scheduled to begin in 1997.

The shares of Documentum Inc. shares rose strongly on their first day of trading. Documentum stock, priced at $24, closed at $30 in trading of almost 2.1 million shares yesterday. Earlier it traded as high as $34. Documentum sold 1.8 million shares to raise $43.2 million. The company plans to use the money for general purposes. Documentum, based in Pleasanton, Calif., makes software that speeds and automates the creation and distribution of complex documents.
