Pressmen Union At Daily News Approves Cuts

The pressmen's union, which would lose more jobs than all but two other unions at The Daily News, last night ratified an agreement that its leaders reached last week with Robert Maxwell. Mr. Maxwell, the British publisher, purchased The News on Thursday, contingent on all 10 of the paper's unions ratifying new contracts. If the unions' members approve the tentative settlements by tomorrow, Mr. Maxwell is to take over the paper on Wednesday. If they do not, The News is scheduled to cease publication.

Unions at Daily News Head for Finish Line

With members of most of the striking unions at The Daily News set to vote today on new labor contracts, lawyers for some of the unions tried yesterday to work out last-minute details on the contracts with representatives of Robert Maxwell, the British publisher who is buying the newspaper. Among the issues under discussion were layoffs and cash inducements to leave the paper, particularly for reporters and editors, as well as staff levels for the mailers' union.

The Federal Trade Commission said today that it was investigating for possible antitrust violations the proposed purchase of the Financial News Network by its biggest competitor. The commission said it had asked a Federal bankruptcy court to withhold final approval of the sale of FNN to the Consumer News and Business Channel until it had a chance to complete its review. It asked the two parties for information and asked the court for 20 days to review it.

So when Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation said recently that it might -- just might -- consider selling some magazines if it could not reduce its debt through the sale of other assets, the buzz began. By late last week, speculation centered on the Cahners Publishing Company, the largest American publisher of business and special-interest publications, as a likely suitor.

Abitibi-Price Inc., the Canadian newsprint producer based in Toronto, said it would close about 200,000 metric tons of its production capacity in 1991, possibly taking one of its newsprint mills out of service. Analysts said Abitibi-Price had about 1.9 million metric tons of capacity, or 12 percent of the North American newsprint market. A number of newsprint companies have announced temporary shutdowns to reduce inventories and strengthen prices. Newsprint demand has been slack because of declines in newspaper advertising and more foreign competition.

Amerifirst Bank Seized

Amerifirst Bank, the nation's oldest federally chartered savings and loan association, was seized by Federal regulators on Friday after it failed to find a buyer for its 54-branch system. The 55-year-old institution was brought down by bad real estate loans and was unable to meet Federal capital guidelines. Amerifirst had $3.7 billion in assets and $2.8 billion in deposits when the Office of Thrift Supervision moved in and created a new Federal mutual association to assume operations.

Warner to Add Data on Drug

The Warner-Lambert Company said it would give the Government new information this week about the company's new Alzheimer's disease drug. On Friday, a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee had recommended against approval of the drug, called tacrine. Warner-Lambert's stock declined $1.875 yesterday, closing at $72.50 on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock has lost $5.75 since last Thursday.
