LEAD: The General Motors Corporation, said it would lay off 2,050 workers indefinitely at two plants that build Corsica and Beretta cars. The G. M. compact-car lines compete with such Japanese models as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Mazda 626 and Subaru Legacy. G. M. will lay off 1,600 employees at a Linden, N.J., plant, and 450 workers at a plant in Wilmington, Del.

Exxon Plant Shut

LEAD: The explosion Sunday at the Exxon Corporation's refinery in Baton Rouge, La., has forced an adjacent Exxon chemical unit to suspend production, company officials said. The chemical plant, though undamaged by the explosion and subsequent fire, uses naphtha from the refinery to produce compounds like propylene and benzene.
