He was made famous as the inspiration for the eccentric character Siegfried Farnon, in the semi-autobiographical books of James Herriot (Alf Wight), adapted for film and television as All Creatures Great and Small.

Schaffer of Philadelphia, whose extensive knowledge of botany and photography and intimate acquaintance with the Canadian Rockies were put to such good use a few years in her collaboration in the production of a beautiful book on the Alpine flora of that region, has completed another book based upon her explorations in Alberta and British Columbia.
